Medical Supplies
Over the last several decades, constant improvements in modern medicine have yielded a myriad of sophisticated techniques and technologies. These advances have mandated a vast repertoire of medical supplies for various purposes. Some of these are basic and versatile and can be applicable to a number of situations. Others are highly specialized but serve a critical function for a specific need. Some supplies, like the tongue depressor, are simple inventions but they fulfill such an essential need that they can be found in virtually every medical practice. Others, like a personal mobility device, can be wonders of engineering tailored to an individual with highly specific needs.
Many medical devices are geared toward the individual for personal use in the home. In some cases, these can provide an essential need to a person with a specific medical condition. Examples of this include home diabetic monitoring kits and insulin self-injection kits. Other supplies can save the life of an otherwise healthy person in an emergency situation, like an emergency snake bite kit. Finally, many home devices, rather than saving the life of an individual, are designed to improve the quality of life for people with certain limitations. For example, a wheelchair, while not necessarily essential for the survival of its owner, can enable a person of limited mobility to move freely both within the home and outside.
Other supplies such as nursing scrubs and medical scrubs are designed for the medical office or hospital. Others can be used by doctors or nursing staff to diagnose and treat patients, or they can be used by patients during routine visits or hospital stays. They can also be used in training student or resident medical personnel. Many are routinely stocked in hospitals and clinics. Others are essential components of emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and fire trucks.
Because these supplies are specific to the medical field or to patients, they can be difficult to find. Common items, like walking sticks or over-the-counter medications, can be available in drug stores, grocery stores or even convenience stores. Other items, like hospital beds, might be more readily found at a supply store that specifies in medical items. Many of these can be found online and items may be purchased for delivery to the home or office. Even online prescriptions can sometimes be obtained via phone, the internet or mail in orders by providing a prescription through fax or other methods, and can sometimes be obtained at a discount depending on the method of purchase used.
