Emergency Medical Supplies
In a medical emergency, hospital or emergency personnel must be able to react quickly and efficiently, possibly to save human lives. To do this, they must be equipped with all necessary emergency medical supplies. These supplies must be efficient, accessible and easily operated and they must enable the user to work rapidly.
Many hospitals feature emergency rooms or trauma wards in which such supplies are warranted. These may include triaging gear for use in the case of a mass emergency involving many people. For example, in a bus or airplane crash or a train derailment, hundreds of severely injured patients may be brought to the same emergency room in a hospital. The limited doctor and nursing staff in the hospital can easily be overwhelmed, and they must distinguish the most severely injured cases from those that are not immediately life-threatening. These may also be useful in emergency rooms that are overcrowded in general situations having to do with limited staff.
Emergency supplies are also mandatory for emergency vehicles such as ambulances or fire trucks. Paramedics or emergency medical technicians must be able to stabilize patients and transport them as quickly and as safely as possible. In this capacity, the stretcher is one item that can be invaluable. It must be lightweight, in order to be readily carried by two people even with the weight of a large adult male on top of it. It may also contain immobilization straps for securing the patient and preventing a fall. Stretchers are sometimes available as short boards only; others have retractable wheels enabling them to be rolled and to roll the patient directly into the waiting ambulance.
